It’s no secret that I’ve fallen head over heels for the recent hot chocolate bomb sensation, and can you blame me?! I had so much fun making these Christmas themed chocolate bombs that I thought, why not spread the love a little more and make a Valentine’s Day version?!

These Valentine’s Hot Chocolate Bombs are going to rock your world…You can keep them simple or get really creative with some optional additions, food coloring and decorative sprinkles.

Homemade gifts that are made from the heart are the absolute best. And those that are edible are even better!2 cups of pink hot chocolate and Valentine's Day Hot Chocolate bombs on a table

How to Make Valentine’s Hot Chocolate Bombs

  1. Add almond bark to a small microwave safe bowl, heat for 30 seconds, stir and continue heating for 10-20 seconds at a time until chocolate is almost melted. Remove from the microwave and stir until completely melted.
  2. Spoon a small amount of chocolate into the mold. Using the paintbrush spread the chocolate evenly around the mold, making sure to get all the way up to the edges.
  3. Allow chocolate to harden and repeat layering on more chocolate until you have done about 3-4 layers. Allow chocolate to completely hard, 5 minutes the gently remove from the mold.
  4. Heat a microwave safe plate in microwave for 1-2 minutes, remove. Place one half of the chocolate shells, open side down, onto the plate to melt the rim.
  5. Remove and fill with 2 teaspoons of hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows. Melt the rim of the second half of the chocolate shells.
  6. Quickly place the two open ends together and smooth out any extra chocolate around the seam. Set aside and allow to dry 5-10 minutes then decorate.
  7. To decorate, add a small amount of strawberry candy melts to a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds, stir and continue heating for 10-20 seconds at a time until chocolate is almost melted. Remove from the microwave and stir until completely melted Transfer to plastic squeeze bottle and swirl melted chocolate over bombs.
  8. Add sprinkles for decoration if you like.
  9. When you are ready to use,  place in a mug and pour hot milk over the top to melt and reveal the hot chocolate mix and marshmallows.showing milk being poured over hot chocolate bomb

WHAT VARIATIONS CAN BE MADE TO THESE VALENTINE’S HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS?

  • Oh where to start?! While there’s nothing wrong with keeping your chocolate bombs simple, you can just as easily go all out and decorate till your heart’s content. Here are great ideas for taking your Valentine’s Hot Chocolate Bombs up a notch:
    • You could make an assortment using different types of chocolate i.e. milk chocolate, white and dark chocolate;
    • Add in some strawberry milk mix to the cocoa mix and include some other sprinkles that you may fancy;
    • Omit the cocoa mix altogether and increase the strawberry milk mix for a creamy strawberry beverage;
    • Create an adult version by adding a tot (or two) of strawberry liqueur to your mug while the hot chocolate bomb is melting.

HOW SHOULD I STORE THESE VALENTINE’S HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS?

  • You can store these Valentine’s chocolate bombs for up to 2-3 weeks in an airtight container either in the refrigerator or in a place that’s dry and cool.
  • Storing your bombs in an airtight container or bag is important, especially if any of your chocolate spheres have holes, causing air to mix with the contents of your bombs which will make ingredients like the mini marshmallows go stale or the cocoa and strawberry milk clump.

TIPS FOR MAKING AND GIFTING VALENTINE’S HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS

  • Place your chocolate bombs into a cello bag or small cardboard box with some ribbon and a gift tag. Avoid gifting these to those far away though as they are likely to melt during transportation.
  • Giving your chocolate molds a second chocolate coating 5 minutes after the first application is a good idea in order to strengthen the sides of the chocolate bombs, ensuring that they hold up upon assembly.
  • Make sure to use silicone molds instead of hard plastic molds otherwise you may have greater difficulty removing your chocolate spheres without them breaking or sticking to the molds.
