TIPS FOR MAKING HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS

  • I like to re-coat the sides of the chocolate bomb molds after 5 minutes of sitting from the first chocolate application to the molds. I do this to avoid the chocolate from pooling at the bottom of the molds with the sides becoming thin which will break when you go to take them out of their molds. Once you recoat the molds, put the molds in the fridge or freezer to set.
  • Use silicone molds (affiliate link) instead of hard plastic molds – it’s much easier to remove the chocolate bombshells from the stretchy silicone molds.
  • These make great holiday gifts and can be customized easily!
  • Add a holiday mug if gifting these chocolate bombs and place it in a cardboard box to make a gift box set.

WHAT IS A HOT CHOCOLATE BOMB?

  • Hot chocolate bombs are round, hollow, chocolate shells that are filled with hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows and any other treats you desire such as crushed peppermint candies. You place a hot chocolate bomb at the bottom of a mug and fill the mug with hot milk, melting the hot chocolate bomb to create a delicious and creative hot chocolate once stirred.

WHAT ELSE CAN I ADD INSIDE THE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS?

  • As you can see from my recipe, I’ve used mini marshmallows and crushed peppermint candies in addition to the hot cocoa mix to fill these chocolate bombs. There’s nothing stopping you from customizing your chocolate bombs by adding the following in addition or as an alternative to what I’ve added:(amazon affiliate links)
    • Chopped Andes Mints
    • Colored Marshmallows
    • Colored chocolate Chips

HOW SHOULD I STORE THESE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS?

  • Store your hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container or zip lock bag for 2-3 weeks in a cool, dry place. Alternatively, store them in the refrigerator.
  • Keep in mind that if your chocolate spheres have any holes in them and your storage bag isn’t completely sealed, your mini marshmallows inside the bombs may go stale after a few days.

CAN I GIFT THESE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS?

  • You definitely can! These hot chocolate bombs make adorable holiday gifts.
  • Simply place a ball in a cello bag and seal it either with a heat sealer or use cello bags that have self-adhesive seals. Then tie your bag with a pretty ribbon or with twist ties and add a gift label.
  • I don’t recommend shipping these chocolate bombs to friends and family who live a distance away as they are likely to melt in the process. They are best as gifts that you can give directly.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

  1. Place the dark chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate chips are fully melted.chocolate chips in a bowl
  2. Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated. Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs.melted chocolate spread into circular silicone mold
  3. Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
  4. When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with marshmallows. If you want to add in crushed peppermint, you can add that in now.Hot coco mix placed inside one half of chocolate moldmini marshmallows being added to chocolate shell
  5. Reheat the chocolate in 15-second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam. 6. Melt the white chocolate chips in 15-second intervals until melted, then place the remaining semi-sweet chocolate and white chocolate in piping bags. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs to decorate. Finish decorating by sprinkling the remaining crushed peppermint candy on top of the chocolate drizzles.3 hot chocolate bombs on a cutting board with mini candy canes
  7. Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour. To make the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug. Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate. When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.
