Just add all of the ingredients to the Crockpot – it’s that easy!

Recipe Notes:

  • An easy and efficient way to core the pears is to use a melon baller.
  • Substitute brown sugar with a few tablespoons of honey and consider other sugar alternatives by using maple syrup or coconut sugar.
  • You can use fresh or frozen pears for this recipe. Thaw the frozen pears first.
  • Pear butter can be served with a cheese platter, as a topping or spread for pancakes, muffins, or waffles. It can also be enjoyed as an add-in to yogurt, cottage cheese, or oats. It’s also a great substitute for applesauce in recipes.
  • Adding ground ginger will provide a little bite to this butter that’s very delicious.
  • Spike the pears with a little liqueur, or some brandy or cognac. Tawny Port is also a delicious addition.
  • In the last hour or two, remove the slow cooker’s lid to allow any excess liquid to cook off. Keep an eye on it at this stage to prevent it from overcooking.

How should I store my slow cooker pear better?

Once cooled, place the pear butter in clean sealable jars and keep it refrigerated. It will stay fresh for up to a week.
To prevent bacteria from contaminating the pear butter, use clean utensils when dipping into the stored pear butter.

What type of pear works best for pear butter?

While I’ve used Bartlett pears in this recipe, you can use various types of other pears too such as Anjou pears, Asian pears, Concorde, Bosc, Starkrimson, and many more.

Use what you have in season at your local farmer’s market or grocery store for the best taste and consistency.

Do I need to peel the pear skin?

Pear skin is so soft that it easily dissolves while cooking. Some say that keeping the pear skin on results in a gritty texture in the pear butter but I’ve never experienced that, especially if you use a strong blender to achieve smooth butter.

Is canning another storage option?

Absolutely! Use glass jars intended for canning and once you have completed the canning process, remember to date and label the jars. Place your jars in a cool dark area for up to a year.
