What is Chicken Parmesan?

Chicken Parmesan, otherwise known as “chicken parmigiana”, is a classic Italian chicken dish consisting of breaded chicken breast that’s covered with a tomato-based sauce and cheese such as mozzarella, provolone, or parmesan.

This dish is usually made in a skillet and sometimes added to the oven for a few minutes of broiling but I’ve decided to make these juicy and flavorful chicken breasts in the air fryer!

How should I store Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You also have the option of freezing your chicken breasts for up to 3 months. Thaw any frozen chicken parmesan in the refrigerator overnight and either reheat in the air fryer or in the oven (covered to prevent burning and drying out).

What Should I serve with Chicken Parmesan?

Serve this air fryer chicken parmesan over your favorite pasta with some extra sauce and shredded cheese. You can also enjoy this dish with rice or quinoa. For a low-carb option, consider serving this chicken parmesan over spiralized zucchini or cauliflower rice.

Is this Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan Gluten-Free?

As the recipe is, no. I’ve used all-purpose flour as well as regular panko bread crumbs to coat the chicken breasts. For a gluten-free alternative, use gluten-free flour and gluten-free bread crumbs. Both options are easily sourced at most grocery stores.

Recipe Notes:

  • Using a meat thermometer is a very good idea if you are unsure whether the chicken is cooked. All chicken should register 165F internally for it to be safe to eat.
  • Since air fryer machines can differ, it’s best to use the cooking time as a guide and check what is recommended by the brand you are using.
  • Prepare the basket or tray of the air fryer by spraying it well with cooking oil. This will prevent the chicken from sticking.
  • You can easily double this recipe but then you will likely need to cook the chicken in batches depending on the size of your airfryer.
