TIPS FOR MAKING THESE APPLE TURNOVERS

  • If you do not wish to make the glaze, you can brush beaten egg over the top of each turnover, and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar before baking or add the sprinkled cinnamon sugar once it’s baked.
  • Peeling your apples isn’t absolutely necessary but I do peel mine for this recipe as I prefer the soft baked apples pieces inside the dough without any peelings.
  • To reduce the chances of your turnover filling from leaking during baking, you can try the following:
    • Egg wash all the edges of the pastry
    • Crimp tightly all along the edges of the pastry
    • Refrigerate your turnovers for 20 minutes prior to baking them.apple turnovers stacked on an orange plate

WHAT IS A TURNOVER?

  • Turnovers are similar to hand pies in that they can become a portable dessert or type of baked sandwich with a filling. They are made by baking a pastry dough that’s been filled with either a sweet or savory filling and sealed on along the edges.

HOW DO I STORE THESE APPLE TURNOVERS

  • You can store your apple turnovers in an airtight container in a cool, dry area of your kitchen which should keep them fresh for the following day or two. Alternatively, store them in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
  • These turnovers can also be frozen either before baking or post baking.
  • To freeze them prior to baking, skip the egg wash after crimping and flash freeze them by placing them flat on a lined baking sheet. Then transfer the turnovers to a freezer bag or airtight container. When you want to bake them, arrange them frozen on a baking sheet without thawing out, egg wash and bake at 400 degrees F for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • If you wish to freeze these turnovers after having baked them then skip the glazing and store in the freezer for up to one month. To reheat, place them on a lined baking sheet and heat in a 325 degree F pre-heated oven for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Then add your glaze and cinnamon sugar.
