The buttermilk makes this bread ultra moist and smooth – perfect to enjoy with your favorite soups and stews, or as a delicious snack with softened butter!

Recipe Notes:

  • Make your own buttermilk by measuring out the same required amount of full cream milk for buttermilk. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or white wine vinegar. Stir and leave to rest for 10 minutes before using in the recipe.
  • Change up your cheese using a sharp cheddar or a combination of your preferred cheeses.
  • Make mini Irish bread muffins using this recipe. Simply bake the bread batter in muffin tins for approximately 20-25 minutes in a preheated oven at 425F.
  • Turn this into a gluten-free bread by using gluten-free flour such as Bob’s Red Mill flour. Simply measure cup for cup. Gluten-free flours vary with the amount of moisture and fat they absorb, so be aware of this and make adjustments if necessary.
  • This bread is perfect to serve with stews and soups, at breakfast, or as a snack with butter and toppings of your choice.
Can I freeze this Irish Bread?

Yes, it will. It is preferable to slice it up, wrap individual slices in plastic, and place them in an airtight freezer container. The bread will last up to 3 months.

To reheat leftover slices of this homemade bread, wrap the slices in aluminum foil and reheat in the oven at 350F for about 10 minutes. If you want to reheat an entire loaf then add on a couple of minutes.

What does the baking soda do for the bread?

Baking soda reacts with the acidity in the buttermilk and releases little bubbles of carbon dioxide trapped in the dough. This has the effect of making the bread rise, a process known as ‘leavening’.
