Add 1 tablespoon of butter to a large skillet over medium high heat. Brown the brats in the skillet to sear the outsides. Transfer brats to the bottom of a 6 quart or larger slow cooker.
Add remaining butter to your skillet along with the sliced onions. Saute until onions become caramelized.
Place the onions over the top of the brats in the slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker and pour the beer around the brats.
Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or high for 2-3 hours, until the brats are cooked through.
Serve immediately on toasted hoagie rolls or keep on warm until ready to serve, enjoy!
